Rock and Surf Angling – Settler’s City Toyota Under 50’s vs Over 50’s Competition

The annual Settler’s  City Toyota Under 50’ s vs Over 50’s rock and surf angling competition was fished in extremely windy  conditions along the coast off Darian’s farm on Saturday 3rd  March . The sea although rough was warm and dirty , resulting in reasonable fishing although the anglers were plagued by barbel .

A total of 22 anglers fished the event , and a number of excellent catches were made with a total weight of 56.8 kg being caught . A total of 30 eligible fish consisting of 9 different species were caught of which 97% were successfully released .  The under 50’s under the captaincy of Niall Borland retained their title with a bag of 38.6 kg to the 18.2 kg caught by the over 50’s team under the captaincy of Len Titmuss .

The  heaviest fish caught by the over 50’s was a baardman of 2.5kg caught by Rodger Coates . Terry Stewart caught the heaviest bag amongst the over 50’s with 7.2 kg . Paul Knight caught the heaviest fish  by the under 50’s with a outstanding Cob of 9.9kg in addition to the heaviest bag amongst  the under 50’s with 12.9kg . Other outstanding catches were the 4.4 kg cob caught by young Ben Keeton , out fishing his dad and the 3.7 kg Pignose Grunter caught by Brendon Marais (who also out fished his dad ) . The over 50’s who last won the competition in 2005 are seriously considering introducing a handicap system !

A special thanks to the Sponsors Settlers City Toyota from Grahamstown for generously sponsoring the event and the braai afterwards .
