SUMMER IS ON IT’S WAY
The weather was greatly improved for this competition. This was a great relief to most of the anglers who could not take another cold, rainy and windy night on the river. The number of angers also started to increase with the warm weather. There were 19 anglers who participated, which was a nice improvement over the number of participants during winter. A couple of the regular anglers have still not returned and a couple of fair-weather angers where put off by the horrible weather that Port Alfred experienced on Friday. Hopefully the weather and fish will play along for the competition next month.
Most anglers had a lovely night with the spotted grunter biting throughout the night. A couple of anglers made quota early on in the evening, which was great. This resulted in a great many legally sized fish being returned to the water. Listening to the anglers, the eating pattern of the fish was quite interesting. For example, Deon Schmidt and Peter Mitchley were anchored less than 20 meters apart. At one stage, Deon was catching fish after fish and the Peter was hardly getting a bite, even using the same bait. This strange, but not unheard of behavior, was experienced by quite a couple of other anglers, at different fishing spots in the river.
It was also great to see a Kob of size being caught. This is the first Kob that has been caught during one of the competition for the last couple of months. Most of the anglers were so taken aback, that they were joking that they thought that Kob were extinct in the Kowie River. Kob do not generally get caught in the Kowie the during the winter months, but seem to come on the bite towards the end of Septmeber. This catch hopefully shows great promise for the months ahead. As mentioned, most of the anglers did well. There were 21 qualifying fish caught, which excluded the numerous fish that were released. 19 anglers took part, of which 4 were juniors and 4 were ladies. It was nice to see the ladies and the juniors returning with the warm weather. The attendance at the breakfast also increased slightly, to 20. One of the best happening of the event, was the attendance of Russell and Jon, from Pick and Pay. They participated in the completion and attended the breakfast. Pick and Pay are one of the main sponsors of this event, and have supported this completion since the beginning. A very big THANK YOU to Russell and Jon for everything they have done for this event and for the sport of fishing.
Well done to all the guys and gals who keep coming back to show their support by participating in this wonderful monthly event.
Statistics from the competition:
- · 19 anglers participated, including 4 Juniors and 4 Ladies
- · A total of 21 Qualifying fish were caught with a total weight of 24.917Kgs
- · The Weather was warmer, but still had a bite in the wind.
- · Water Temperature was relatively consistent round the 17 degrees Celsius mark
Please remember that this monthly get-together is about having FUN and is NOT about serious competition. We get together so that we can all enjoy a lovely afternoon and night on the river. It is the perfect opportunity to introduce people to angling and for family outings on the river. We are always keen to have new people join us, so remember to pass on the word to anyone who may be interested. You know our motto, “The More The Merrier.” If everyone that participated can introduce one more angler to our next monthly outing, that would be great.
Important Notes:
The NEXT COMPETITION is on the 8th October 2011
Regarding Club Membership, nearly all the anglers taking part are members of the Port Alfred River and Ski Boat Club, or are family of club members. The Port Alfred River and Ski Boat Club is a fantastic club and well worth joining, so for those of you who are not members, please consider joining as this entitles you to the use of all the clubs facilities. If you would like some more information please feel free to visit or contact Graeme Kelbrick at the Port Alfred River and Ski-Boat Club. The number is 046 624 4532 or e-mail to parsc@telkomsa.net .
Also, a reminder that those anglers who would like to bring live fish to the scale may do so. We have anglers that bring live fish to the scale and release them after the weigh-in. So if you do not want to keep your fish to eat, you may bring them live to the scale and then release them. This event is more about the outing and fun, than about prizes and anything else, so some anglers even release fish of size, if they do not want to bring them to the scale.
Yours in Fishing
Bruce Gie
